I’m pleased to announce that the second issue of George Mason’s student design magazine is now available. It can be purchased as a hard copy at MagCloud or downloaded as a pdf for free. Congratulations to editors/designers Carey Jordan and Kelsey Hunter for doing a spectacular job, and all students who contributed writing or designed [...]
When I’m clev’r I give me magazines a good shake to clear ‘f the dandruff before leaving the store. Obnoxious? perhaps but I always hoped Borders would calculate the cost of cleaning up all the cards (mine and the plenty of ones that got there quite by accident) and demand to receive subscription card-free magazines. [...]
“Mr. Magazine” Samir Husni had a tip in his article for Designing Magazines, that I think I’d always kinda followed but hadn’t really thought about, so reading it really resonated with me. He said that a designer “shouldn’t trap white space in the middle of a layout.” For years I’d been suggesting that students build [...]
I bought a bunch of magazines on my recent European adventure (and I plan on writing about them, I really do) but a couple I didn’t buy were these British men’s digests. (Please forgive the blurry iPhone photos.) As I recall, when the smaller size first migrated to the US in the woman’s sector, the [...]
While I contemplate the return of Designing Magazines (the blog, the book is available, and quite reasonably priced, at an online retailer near you) I wanted to share a link to Tim O’Brien’s excellent post about Mother Jones’s use of illustration.
During the election, there were a lot of cover stories about both candidates, but my (completely unscientific) sense was that there were more about Obama. When he won, there were a bunch more pictures of him on smiling down from the racks. And now with the inauguration just days a way, there’s a whole lot [...]
As a magazine designer, I take no small comfort in the decisions I don’t have to make—the signage that stays the same issue to issue, the consistent margins, the grid that remains my stalwart companion through the months and the pages. Anyone who’s taken paint to canvas knows that it’s the first few strokes that [...]
I have never been visited by a teenager intent on selling me a magazine subscription (chocolate bars, yes) and I thought the practice was largely of historical interest only. But apparently it continues, it’s an even bigger racket than you’d think it is, and it has consequences that are sometimes tragic. The Houston Press tells [...]
Joining the blog roll today: Cool Infographics, a nice site about visualizing data. The perspective is not editorial, but I think that’s a good thing. There’s a lot inspiring work that takes forms other than what’s tried and true on magazine and newspaper pages.
In this, the 75th anniversary year, Esquire remains intent on proving they aren’t as good as they used to me. Frankly, I wouldn’t hold it against them if they didn’t insist on rubbing in our faces. For part one of this series look here. George must be rolling in his spacious, well-appointed Manhattan apartment….
Premiere Business, which I panned last summer is now back with a second volume, which also happens to be a second issue. The good news? They decided to commission some real photography for this one rather than relying on stock. The bad news? It still has an editorial mission along the lines of “Hey kids, [...]
The name of the magazine is Empowering Women, but empowering them to do what, exactly? Read unedited press releases in the form of articles? Lede: “Covering almost 70% of the earth, [the ocean] is full of minerals and nutrients. Wouldn’t it be great to start each day by diving into sparkling blue surf and taking [...]
Ok, it’s settled. There is no appropriate use for Papyrus.
